Family Photoshoot in Dublin: How to Get Natural Family Photos
The best family photographs rarely come from everybody standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera. They usually happen in the few seconds in between — when someone laughs, a child climbs onto a parent, or everybody forgets about the camera for a moment.
What makes a family photoshoot feel natural?
I give enough direction that nobody feels awkward, but not so much that the photographs become stiff. I might move you towards better light, suggest where to sit or give the children something simple to do. From there, I let the interaction happen.
Do children have to behave for the camera?
No. In fact, trying too hard to make children behave can be the quickest way to make a session stressful. Movement, silliness and short attention spans are normal. I work around them and keep changing what we are doing before anyone gets fed up.
What should you wear for family photographs?
Think coordinated rather than matching. Soft neutrals, denim, knits and simple patterns tend to work well. Avoid dressing everybody in the same colour or in clothes that feel unlike you. Comfort matters, especially for children.
At home or outdoors?
Both can work beautifully. Home sessions feel personal and relaxed, particularly with babies and younger children. Outdoor sessions give children more room to move and can be lovely when the light and weather cooperate. The best choice is the one that suits your family rather than the one that looks most impressive on Instagram.
Should parents be in the photographs?
Yes. Even if you feel much more comfortable photographing the children, the pictures they are likely to value most in years to come are the ones that include you too. You do not have to love being photographed; you just have to be there.
