Getting the Most Out of Your Dog in a Family Photo Session

I love, love , love working with family pets. I love dogs nearly as much as babies! Including your dog in a family photo session at home is a wonderful way to capture the love and energy they bring to your life. With my experience photographing families and their pets in their own homes, I know how to create a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where everyone—including your furry family member—feels at ease. Here’s how we can work together to capture your dog’s unique personality while ensuring they stay happy, safe, and engaged.

1. Prepping Your Dog for the Session

Before the session, it's a good idea to bring your dog out for a good brisk walk to burn off any extra energy. Have some treats prepped and ready to go. A favorite treat or toy also helps keep them focused and brings out their playful side, which can add an extra level of fun to the photos. Having these close by is a great way to keep them engaged and comfortable. I might ignore your dog when I first enter the house. This goes against my instincts but it prevents the pup getting over excited. Please let your dog greet me and please, please don't apologise for them! I love dogs and I'm totally comfortable around them and I know what they're like so.... like your children - just let them be however they will be on the day.

2. Safety First: Trust and Communication

If there are any safety concerns or specific behaviors to be aware of, please let me know in advance. My aim is always to get pets and children in a shot together but not at the risk of any injuries! Please be vigilant and don't take risks. I want to make sure the session feels safe and enjoyable for everyone, and knowing about any potential concerns helps me create a calm, positive environment where everyone can relax.

3. Leave the Commands to Me

Like with children, allowing me to handle the commands helps maintain a consistent flow. I’ll use basic cues like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “look” to capture your dog’s attention and guide them naturally through the session. Treats are key for positive reinforcement and add a gentle way to encourage them in the direction we need for each shot. Please try and leave this to me. Just like with the children. I will take control and this lets you relax and look fab.

4. Grooming and Comfort for the Camera

A quick brushing beforehand will have them looking their best, and it also helps them relax. If they have a favourite collar, bandana, or sweater, feel free to bring it out—it can add an extra touch of personality and complement your family’s style beautifully.

5. Creating a Safe, Cozy Space

Since the session is in your home, we’ll work in a familiar space where your dog can feel completely relaxed. If they need a break, we can let them take time to rest in a cozy spot before resuming. Ensuring your dog feels safe and secure is the key to capturing their true personality.

6. Natural Poses with Family

Dogs often shine in relaxed, candid moments with their family. We’ll capture natural interactions, whether they’re snuggled up by your side, lying at your feet, or enjoying a quiet moment. These everyday moments add authenticity and show the love you share.

7. Embracing Their Unique Personality

Dogs bring a sense of spontaneity and joy to a photo session. Whether they’re in the mood to zoom around, get cozy, or snuggle, we’ll embrace their personality. These real, candid moments often become the most cherished photos because they reflect your dog’s unique place in the family.

With my guidance, gentle commands, and a focus on safety, we’ll make sure your dog feels like part of the magic. Together, we’ll capture their personality, quirks, and the special bond they share with your family, all in the comfort and familiarity of your home.
